Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is a condition high is a build-up of excessive fluid within the brain. The brain normally uses certain level of cerebrospinal fluid for protection, serving as a shock absorber and carrier of nutrients. If this balance is disturbed however, pressure around the brain increases which could result in harmful pressure on tissues from the brain.
Causes of Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus could be congenital (born using the condition) or acquired after birth due to injury or disease for example meningitis, head injury or conditions for example spina bifida.
Hydrocephalus Treatment
It is crucial that normal levels of fluid and pressure are restored to avoid or limit further harm to brain tissue. Treatment usually involves surgery to insert a shunt that allows fluid to drain elsewhere in your body, usually the abdominal cavity.
Physiotherapy Treatment of Hydrocephalus
Excessive pressure around the brain can result in physical problems in infants or children which might affect their physical development, achievement of milestones, balance, coordination or mobility. We of specialist paediatric physiotherapists can offer treatment of a child’s physical problems to be able to maximise their potential and excellence of life. Aims of treatment will be different according to the child’s needs and age but can include:
• Promoting achievement of physical milestones for example sitting, standing, crawling
• Maximising independence in mobility
• Exercises to enhance balance and coordination
• Exercises to stretch or strengthen tight or weak muscles
• Improving confidence and excellence of life
• Improving tolerance and stamina
